A2 TOOL STEEL SUPPLIERS

A2 is a general-purpose tool steel, used for tools for shaping materials e.g. metal & wood.

This grade has medium wear resistance, better than O1, but less than D2 or D3

Supplied Condition:

We supply A2 in the soft annealed condition to max. 241 HB.

We bandsaw cut rounds, wide plates and flats to your requirements.

A2 Tool Steel Chemical Composition (%):

C Cr Mo V
1,00 5,30 1,10 0,25
  • A2 Tool Steel Properties

  • Medium alloyed, air hardening steel (1% C, 5% Cr)
  • High achievable hardness
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Excellent compressive strength
  • Good toughness after heat treatment
  • Intermediate wear resistance, easier to machine and grind

Typical Applications for A2

Suitable for applications which require good wear resistance:

  • Shear blades
  • Cutting, punching, stamping
  • Bending tools
  • Form rolls
  • Cold pilger mandrels
  • Mould for plastic processing
  • Embossing and stamping dies

Soft Annealing

Temperature Cooling Hardness
800 - 840°C furnace max. 241 HB

Stress Relief Annealing

Temperature Cooling
600 - 650°C furnace

Hardening

Temperature Cooling Tempering
950 - 980°C oil, pressure gas (N²), air or hot bath 500 - 550°C See PDF for diagram

FAQs

A2 has good toughness and is known as a versatile general purpose tool steel suitable for applications which require good wear resistance.

A2 tool steel is the equivalent of DIN: 1.2363, AISI: X100CrMoV5.

A2 steel is suitable for applications that need good wear resistance such as cutting tools, form rolls, stamping dies, trimming dies, bending tools and mould for plastic processing.

Both A2 and D2 cold work steels with high hardness after heat treatment. A2 tool steel is a general purpose tool steel with medium wear resistance and good toughness. D2 tool steel is harder and more wear-resistant.
